There were bound to be difficulties in consolidating the loosely federated Indian provinces, princely states, etc. into one homogeneous whole state. Kashmir, after initial dithering, acceded to India voluntarily and by popular consent, then, was invaded by Pakistani tribesmen with the support of the Pakistani government.

It was originally erected from local stone and the main epitaph displayed above is of black Naga stone.

6/14/1947	Congress Working Committee met at New Delhi to draft the resolution to be placed before All India Congress Committee on the acceptance of Mountbatten plan for the partition of India.
12/9/1993	Virbhadra Singh sworn in as Congress CM of Himachal Pradesh.
