2/3/1983Prime Minister Indira Gandhi laid the foundation stone of Assam's new capital 'Pragjyotishpur'.
3/1/1971Central Translation Bureau was setup as a subordinate office under the Ministry of Home Affairs. The Bureau undertakes translation work of manuals, codes, forms and other non-statutory procedural literature of various ministries, departments, offices of the Central Government and Undertakings, Banks etc.

3/1/1960Admiral Dom Vasco-da-Gama (c.1469-1524)-I, Portuguese navigator, arrived in India. He sailed around the Cape of Good Hope to Calicut, Kerala with three vessels and was the first Westerner to sail to India from Europe.

4/18/1930Surya Sen alias Masterda attacked on Armoury of Chittagong with 62 men of the Indian Republican Army.
8/15/1854The first train of the East Indian Railways steamed out of Howrah station destined for Hoogly, which was at a distance of 24 miles. It was the first passenger train catering to public traffic. Officially, it was inaugurated in 1855.
8/14/1947Pakistan was partitioned from India. Gandhiji hailed the following day as one of rejoicing for deliverance from British bondage.
