Historical Event on 5/24/1991
The body of Rajiv Gandhi, India's assassinated former premier and son of the late Indira Gandhi, was cremated in New Delhi today. He was killed by a suicide bomber in the southern state of Tamil Nadu three days ago. Police suspect that Tamil rebels, fighting for independence in Sri Lanka, carried out the murder. Gandhi's death signaled the end of the Nehru dynasty's rule over India. His two children were too young to assume the leadership of this turbulent nation. There was pressure for Sonia Gandhi to succeed her husband, but she was Italian-born and refused.

6/5/1984	Operation 'Blue Star' was launched by Indira Gandhi. Indian commandos stormed into Sikh's holiest gurudwara Golden Temple in Amritsar to flush out the terrorists and other anti-government elements. Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale and over 325 people were killed in the temple. Thus a great rebel arose all over the nation and specially in Punjab.
9/13/1990	An attempt to hijack a Coimbatore-Bangalore-Madras Indian Airlines flight IC 534 to Sri Lanka.
5/25/1965	Independent India had further clashes with Pakistan in 1965 and 1971, one over the intractable Kashmir dispute and the other over Bangladesh. A border war was also fought with China in 1962 in the North-Eastern region, which resulted in the loss of Aksai Chin in Ladakh and smaller areas in the North-east. India continues to dispute sovereignty over these areas.
