1/4/1948Burma achieved its independence from Great Britain. In 1989, Burma changed its name to Myanmar to reflect the multi-ethnic composition of the country. Apart from the Burmese, the main ethnic minority groups are the Karen, Shan, Mon, Chin, and Kachin. Just as the Burmese did against the British, almost all of these ethnic groups have struggled against the Burmese government for self-determination.
9/21/1992The Officers Training School (OTS) women were inducted into the Army as Officers, and the onerous task of training the Lady Cadets of WSES (O) courses commenced at the OTS.

12/9/1946The first meeting of Constitutional Committee Assembly was held in Parliment after a gap of two years, 11 months and 17 days. The Congress started its work of framing the Indian Constitution. Muslim League boycott failed to prevent Constituent Assembly opening. From 16th August 1946, the country witnessed communal riots on an unprecedented scale. At this crucial juncture, on 20th February 1947, Clement Atlee the British prime minister, fixed June 1948 as a deadline for transfer of power and Lord Mountbatten was appointed as the new Viceroy.

5/20/1932Bipinchandra Ramchandra Pal, powerful journalist and revolutionary freedom fighter, passed away. He was amongst the trio which was known as ""Lal - Bal - Pal"" during the freedom struggle. He started a newspaper called ""Swaraj"" for the Indians in England. He also edited several other newspapers like ""Tribune"", ""New India"", ""Vande Mataram"", ""Swaraj"", ""Hindu Review"", ""Democrat"", ""Independent Bengali"", etc.
10/6/1963Baba Kharak Singh, freedom fighter and grand old man of Punjab, died.
9/8/1991Hostage ONGC engineer T.S. Raju and mediator Bipul Mahanta, an Amnesty International member, killed by ULFA in Assam.
