Historical Event on 2/13/1879

Sarojini Naidu ""Nightingale of India"", was born at Hyderabad. She was the first Governor of Uttar Pradesh. She also holds a place of pride among the women freedom fighters of India. She presided over the Kanpur session of Indian National Congress and took active part in Salt Satyagraha and represented Indian women in Round Table Conference, London, 1931.

8/7/1925Monkombu Sambasivan Swaminathan was born in Kumbakonam. He went to Britain and took his Ph.D from the school of Agriculture in Cambridge in 1952. He developed high yielding strains of wheat and rice and accomplished difficult crosses in potato and jute species. In 1971, he was awarded The Ramon Magsaysay Award for generating a new confidence in the agricultural capabilities of the country. He was the Director of the International Rice Research Institute, Philippines. He is also the first agriculture scientist to win the Albert Einstein world science Award in 1986.

9/26/1820Ishwar Chandra Vidyasagar (Banerji), great Indian educationist, social reformer, litterateur, father of Bengali prose and who gave the Bengalees their first Primer in 1855, was born in the village of Birsingha in Midnapore district of Bengal.
7/7/1946Gandhiji addressed the A.I.C.C. meeting at Bombay; Congress accepted the Cabinet Mission plan of May 16.
8/7/1982Krishnakanta Radhakant Handique, linguist, educationist, Sanskrit scholar, principal of J.B. College and Padma Bhushan awardee, passed away. He also authored the learned works 'Naisadhacarita', 'Yasastilaka and Indian Culture' etc. His original treatise written in Sanskrit by Somaveda in the 10th century is an encyclopedic work dealing with Jainism and Indian thoughts and culture.
