4/13/1919Jallianwala Baug massacre. The great Indian tragedy occured in Amritsar which claimed 389 lives and wounded 1,516 activitists fighting for Indian independence. Early in 1919, the Rowlatt Act (Black Act) was passed. This authorized the Government to imprison any person without any trial and conviction in a court of law. This furious act was under the guidence of cruel Brigedier General R. E. H. Dyer and his 50 men troop. Michael O' Dwyer was then the Governor of Punjab who naturally defended the action. This day is observed as Jallianwala Baug Day.
6/12/1894Busushottam Vishwanath Bapat, internationally famed Pali language expert, translator and editor, was born.
5/30/1955Narayan Malhar Joshi, father of Indian Worker's Movement, passed away.
7/21/1988Indian National Satellite (INSAT-1C) launched. This is operational multi-purpose communication and meteorology satellite. It served for only one and a half years. It was launched by European Ariane launch vehicle Ariane-3.

2/4/1934Madhusudan Das ""Utkal Gourab"", passed away. He was described as a great Indian patriot, who wore himself out is giving shape and reality to various nation-building schemes. He wrote a number of articles and poems both in Oriya, English and Bengali to fill people with enthusiasm and patriotism. He was the first non-official Vice Chairman and then Chairman of Cuttack District Board.
