Heavy rains lash Hyderabad, other areas in Telangana

Hyderabad, Sep 26 (IANS) Heavy rains continued to lash Hyderabad and other parts of Telangana for the second consecutive day on Saturday, inundating low-lying areas, disrupting vehicular movement, and throwing normal life out of gear.

Rivulets, ponds, streams and other water bodies in different parts of the state were overflowing, cutting off road connections to villages in some districts.

In state capital Hyderabad, incessant rains since Friday evening have flooded roads, throwing normal traffic out of gear.

Rainwater entered dozens of houses in low-lying areas, damaging household articles and causing severe inconvenience to residents.

Following overnight rains, streets were flooded in Mayuri Marg area in Begumpet. Water gushed into about 100 houses. Similar scenes were witnessed in several other colonies in and around Hyderabad.

Water-logging was reported from many areas within the limits of Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC). Gandhi Nagar Colony, Sharada Nagar and some other areas in Vanasthalipuram were inundated.

Rainwater also entered houses in areas like LB Nagar, Chikote Gardens, and Saroornagar. Many houses in LB Nagar were inundated after Saroornagar lake breached.

The GHMC pressed into service its emergency teams to pump out water. GHMC officials said they were attending to many water-logging complaints.

Neighbouring Ranga Reddy district received heavy rains, resulting in flooding of low-lying areas. There was a flood-like situation at Shamshabad due to the downpour.

In Mahabubnagar town, Pedda Cheruvu lake overflowed, inundating few colonies. Residents complained of poor drainage, leading to frequent inundation.

The India Meteorological Department forecast more rains in the state over the next three days. It issued an impact-based heavy rainfall warning.

According to the IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in several districts. This may lead to massive flooding/water-logging in many low-lying areas, uprooting of trees and electric poles, overflowing of reservoirs and submergence of agricultural fields.

The Hyderabad Met office said the monsoon was active over Telangana and 'very heavy rain' had been recorded since Friday at isolated places in Jangaon, Rangareddy, Siddipet, Warangal Rural, Suryapet and Mahabubnagar.

Nandigama in Rangareddy district received the maximum rainfall of 18.9 cm while Ellanthakunta in Rajanna Sircilla recorded 18.6 cm rainfall till 7 a.m. on Saturday.

Meanwhile, Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar has alerted all District Collectors in view of the heavy rains. He asked them to put the district administrations on high alert.

He directed the officers to be available at their headquarters and take measures to ensure no loss of life and property. He also issued directions that government officers should not go on leave.

The District Collectors were also asked to maintain special vigil in low-lying and vulnerable areas.
